Fur Seal

Animal You | Fur Seal | Until recently, sea lions were grouped under a subfamily called pinnipeds Arctocephalinae, to contrast with Sea Lion Wolves on the basis of the key attribute, namely the coat of dense fur mixed with hairs. Recent genetic data, however, suggests that Callorhinus is more closely related to some species of sea lions and fur seals / sealion subfamily distinction has disappeared from many taxonomies. However, all fur seals have certain features in common: the skin, smaller sizes generally move more and more power, smaller and more abundant prey and sexual dimorphism. Fur seals share with other seals may repent of their hind legs and go on all fours. Sea lions are generally smaller than sea lions less than 1 meter (3 feet 3 inches), the Galápagos_fur_seal is the smallest of all pinnipeds. All species are polygamous, ie dominant males mate with more than one wife. While men fur seals North and aggressively defend women choose specific in their harems, the males of the species of sea lions in the south tend to spatial areas to protect, and women are free to choose your partner based on their own preferences or the social hierarchy.

The rest of the year, a largely pelagic sea life sea lions for their prey, which is abundant and plentiful hunting. Fur seals feed on medium sized fish, squid and krill. Different types of sea lions also South seabirds, penguins, especially in the context of their seals diets. The themselves the prey of sharks, killer whales and sea lions sometimes more. Many species of fur seals were heavily exploited by commercial hunters, especially during the 19th century, when his skin was much appreciated. Many populations of Guadalupe, including fur seals, fur seals and fur seals at Cape have suffered dramatic declines and are still recovering.

Leopard Seal

Animal You | Leopard Seal | The leopard seal is large and muscular, with dark gray back and light gray on the belly. Females are slightly larger than males. The leopard seal lives in the cold waters around Antarctica. In winter, you go to the north of the sub-Antarctic islands. The leopard seal is a solitary creature and meets in small groups only when it is time to mate. Leopard seals are not very talkative, even if occasionally a little 'grunting and growling noises. The leopard seal is bold, powerful and curious. Paul Nicklen, a National Geographic photographer shooting a leopard seal bring live penguins wounded and killed him perhaps in an attempt to photographer, to learn how to hunt.

The leopard seal is second only to the orca (killer whales) in the Antarctic predator. His teeth are 2.5 cm (1 inch). Smaller seals probably eat mostly krill, but also squid and fish. Large leopard seals probably switch from krill to more substantial prey, including king Adelie, Rockhopper, Gentoo and emperor penguins, and, less frequently, other seals such Crabeater seal. Around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) is the main prey. Other prey includes penguins and fish. Krill (Euphausia superba), elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) pups and penguins and other seabirds leopard seals found droppings in small quantities.

When hunting penguins, the leopard seal patrols the waters near the edges of the ice, almost completely under water, waiting for the birds to reach the ocean. It kills the bird swimming grabbed his feet, shaking the penguin vigorously and repeatedly hit his body against the surface of the water, until the penguin is dead. Previous reports detailing the leopard skins its prey before feeding false. The lack of teeth needed to be prey to cut into manageable pieces, waving his prey from left to right to rip and tear into smaller pieces.

The leopard seal Phocidae classified in the family. Its closest relatives are the Ross seal, Crabeater seals and Weddell, which are collectively known as the seals lobodontine. The leopard seal has many features similar to other species. The share of leopard seals have homologous with its close relative, the seals lobodontine.

Harp Seal

Animal You | Harp Seal | The harp is a silver body pretty face. His eyes are pure black. He harp or black triangle marks on the back. Baby Harp Seals (PUP) has a coat of yellow-white at birth, but after three days, the hair is white and remains white for about 12 days. Adult seals grow long you 1.7 to 2.0 meters (5-6 feet) and 140-190 kg (300-400 lb) in weight. Harp seals combine anatomical and behavioral approaches to their body, instead of increasing your metabolism and energy management. A thick layer of fat insulates the body and provides energy when food is scarce or during fasting. Blubber also streamlines your body to swim efficiently. Fins act as heat exchangers, heating or cooling the blood necessary. In ice, the seal together use their front flippers of your body and hind flippers to reduce heat loss Your retina is dominated bar and supported by a tapetum lucidum as a cat and reflection, increasing the sensitivity in low light. A lack of tear ducts, is "screaming" to suppress their tears. On the ice, the mother identifies their children by smell. Underwater, the seal closes his nose and smell everything.

Newborns weigh about 11 kg (24 lbs) and 80-85 cm (31-33 inches) tall. After birth, the mother feeds the dog. Seal milk contains up to 48% fat, so pups gain more than 2.2 kg (4.9 pounds) per day. Meanwhile, the lowest of the "Grey Coat" grows beneath the white neonatal coat, and weighs 80 pounds (36 kg). Weaning is cruel, nursing mothers exchange coupling promiscuity, leaving little on the ice. As the procession begins on the ice, mating usually occurs in the water. Beach puppy cries at first, then maintain sedentary body. At about 13-14 months of age, the puppies move to a bedlamer

The harp seal population is found in three different populations, each of which uses a specific hatchery. The population is divided into two different herds based on breeding location. A second action races in the "West Ice" in eastern Greenland. A third stock breeds on the "East Ice" in the White Sea, off the coast of Russia. Mating takes place between mid-February and April, and varies slightly for each population.
